Trader Joe’s Dumplings are one of my favorite freezer staples to keep on hand. They’re incredibly easy to make and cook in just 10 minutes, which makes them perfect for those days when you want something quick but still satisfying.
While they’re great on their own, I love doctoring them up with sauces and toppings to turn them into something that feels a little more special. With just a few pantry ingredients, you can transform basic dumplings into a flavorful meal that tastes like something you’d order at a restaurant.
How I Upgrade Trader Joe's Dumplings
The real magic of this recipe is in the toppings. Once the dumplings are steamed according to the package directions (about 8-10 minutes), I layer on a combination of sauces and crunchy toppings that bring a ton of flavor and texture.
A drizzle of Trader Joe’s Gyoza Sauce adds a salty, savory base, while Bachan’s Original Japanese BBQ Sauce adds a slightly sweet, umami-rich flavor. Then I add a little Kewpie mayo for creaminess, Trader Joe’s Chili Crunch for heat and texture, and finish everything with crispy fried onions and fresh chives.
It’s the perfect balance of savory, spicy, creamy, and crunchy.

Jump to Recipe- Cook the Dumplings: Prepare the Trader Joe’s Pork Dumplings according to the package directions. I prefer steaming them since it keeps the dumplings soft and tender, but you can also pan-fry them if you prefer a crispy bottom.
- Prepare Your Plate: Once the dumplings are cooked, transfer them to a shallow bowl or plate. Spreading them out slightly makes it easier for the sauces and toppings to coat each dumpling evenly.
- Add the Sauces: Drizzle the dumplings with Trader Joe’s Gyoza Sauce and Bachan’s Original Japanese BBQ Sauce. These two sauces create the perfect balance of savory, slightly sweet, and umami flavor.
- Add the Creaminess: Drizzle Kewpie mayonnaise lightly over the dumplings. The richness of the mayo helps balance the salty and savory sauces while adding a creamy texture.
- Add Crunch and Heat: Sprinkle Trader Joe’s Chili Onion Crunch over the dumplings for a little heat and texture. Then add J-Basket crispy fried onions, which give the dish a delicious crunch that contrasts perfectly with the soft dumplings.
- Finish with Fresh Herbs: Top everything with fresh chopped chives for a bright, fresh finish that brings all the flavors together.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve immediately while the dumplings are warm.

Why This is One of My Favorite 15-Minute Meals
This is one of those recipes I turn to when I want something fast, easy, and satisfying. From start to finish, it takes about 15 minutes, which makes it perfect for busy weekdays, quick lunches, or even a simple late-night meal.
Because the dumplings cook so quickly, most of the time is spent simply assembling the toppings. It’s the kind of recipe that feels effortless but still tastes incredibly flavorful.
What to Serve with Trader Joe's Dumplings
These dumplings are great on their own, but they also pair well with a few simple sides if you want to turn them into a fuller meal.
Some of my favorite pairings include:
- Bibigo white rice
- Taylor Farms Asian Chopped Salad
- Steamed edamame
- A quick cucumber salad
Adding a side of rice or salad makes this feel like a complete takeout-style dinner at home.
